There’s something exciting about waiting for your favorite cow to calve, right? There’s something even more exciting about waiting for your horses to foal! It became part of our evening routine to visit the mares we turned out that were getting ready to have little babies running by their sides.

Now, if someone were to guess which child was the most excited, Emma would be the obvious choice. So you’ll all be surprised to find that it was actually Sylvester who came running out each evening asking, “Can we go check the horses?”

Our white mare, HB, was the last to foal. And I laid claim to name her baby if it was a filly! Finally one evening when I came home from work, Larry announced that she had her little one . . . . . and it was a girl! We jumped in the side by side to go take a peak. Just when we made it through the gate my pager went off. “Hurry up kiddos, we need to get back to the house!”

As Ethan was closing the second gate Sylvester sweetly asked, “Can’t you just walk back to the house?” “Uh, no. I have to hurry.” He blinks his eyes sweetly, long lashes fluttering up and down, “Well, couldn’t you just run?” When I continued to refuse to get out of the side by side he turned to Larry, “Well, can’t she just walk back to the house, it’s not that far.”

Huh, and just when I though we were friends Sylvester!
