3rd Annual Bull Sale Prep

3rd Annual Bull Sale Prep

As we get ready for our 3rd annual bull sale, I find myself struggling to think of something to write about as there is so much I would like to share. While bull… talk is exciting. I will leave that to Larry, Emma, and Ethan and hope you come visit them at our sale. (We will also have online bidding through Bear Paw Livestock!) For now, enjoy a little snapshot of our lives.

I decided to venture outside a couple weekends ago to find out what all the fuss was about filling up the feed buckets. Travis first mentioned “filling up 800 million buckets” to feed the heifers and bulls when he helped us out. Lately, the kids have been bargaining to get out of that particular chore. Last time I helped, it didn’t seem that bad.

On this particular day, Larry assigned Ethan to the infamous chore. About half way to the destination. he brilliantly bargained his way out of it as he went to catch his horse and start the tractor.

Emma and I headed up to fill buckets. Last time I filled buckets, there were four. This time… Well, there wasn’t 800 million: but there were plenty more than four. Emma went right to work. Luckily. I had my camera so I was able to take plenty of pictures of her delight!

I thought it was hilarious until she left me to chase after the dogs and I had to fill up the buckets. So. I get it now, dust flying in your face, in your mouth. Not getting the door shut fast enough or having to bang on the side to get enough grain to come out to fill the bucket. I’m rethinking my decision to turn the grain bin into a chicken house!

Speaking of chores, Larry. Emma, and Ethan fitted the bulls this year. It’s fun watching the kids put their skills to use. I love that they dive all in, putting forth full effort. Ethan has to have several jobs and the kid just cant sit still. Between getting bulls in the alley, making tags, and helping hold heads and clippers, he cleaned various parts of the barn.

Larry stated at one point, “Hey, this is the bull from the cow Ethan traded us.” Larry and Ethan often trade back and forth all kinds of things -pickups, cows. parts, everything. A bit later, I noticed Ethan leaning against the barn, watching, or rather, glowering. As he’s not still often, I commented, “What’s wrong with you?” “Well.” he exclaimed. “I want my cow back!

Spring Time!!

Spring Time!!

It's spring time. . .the time when everything simultaneously bursts from dormancy and some dive into a constant state of daydreaming!  I absolutely love it.  Although I notice it does require a bit more patience on Larry's part.  I helped with feeding this past...

Sleepwalker

Sleepwalker

Oh my sweet, little Sylvester.  He came to me after school pleading, "Mom, can you make the sleepwalking stop?  It's getting weird."  I turned to look at him, taking a minute to think about what he meant and trying to figure out what he was talking about.  Then I...

Second Annual Bull Sale

Spring time, the season of highly unpredictable weather. Rain, maybe; snow, yep sure; and mud, most definitely. I’m contemplating buying a really long rug that we can have on hand by the door. When we need to, we can just roll it out to where we need to go from the...

Teamwork

Meet Brute and Jasper!  Since before we were married, Larry has wanted a team of horses.  Honestly, I've held him back.  And honestly, I wish I wouldn't have.  He's purchased and raised a couple teams, but we always felt pressure and need to sell them as finances were...

Can’t You Just Run?

There’s something exciting about waiting for your favorite cow to calve, right? There’s something even more exciting about waiting for your horses to foal! It became part of our evening routine to visit the mares we turned out that were getting ready to have little...

Boss in Training

Quirt has turned into quite the opinionated young man, and he’s not afraid to tell you exactly what he’s thinking.   We have this longhorn. . . . . . . . . .that doesn’t like to stay in. . . . . . .ever.  Unless, of...

Milking the Cow

I recently read the poem, “God Created a Ranch Wife.”  It is a great tribute to all the things expected of a ranch wife that are often taken for granted.  If you haven’t read it, I suggest it.  I admire all the women I see who are out there...
